Day 4 Scottish Tour

Day 4

This morning we headed north from Ballachulish and traveled along the "Road to the Isles." We stopped at the Glenfinnan Monument to take some photos and to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

The Glenfinnan Monument is a tribute to the Jacobite clansmen who fought and died in the cause of Prince Charles Edward Stuart. It stands at the head of Loch Shiel.

On the way to Mallaig.

Mallaig. This is where we crossed by ferry to "The Misty Isle," the Isle of Skye, the biggest and northermost of Scotland's inner Hebrides.

After crossing over to Skye, the first place we visited was The Clan Donald Center at Armadale castle. The clan Donald (MacDonald) was the most powerful clan on Skye but as you can see from the photo below, all that is left of the castle is a ruin. However there was a very nice museum there and attractive gardens. The restaurant is charming although the food is only adequate but I was able to sample a Lorne sausage on a roll, something that I hadn't tasted in years.

A Lorne sausage is a square sausage made from ground meat (pork and beef) and rusk (a dry biscuit).

Just to prove I was there on the Isle of Skye.

We drove along the coast line heading towards the Skye Bridge, a road bridge over Loch Alsh connecting the Isle of Skye to the mainland.

The village of Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye.

We made a photo stop at Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland's most picturesque castles situated on its own island at the head of Loch Duich.

Loch Duich.

Then we continued on to our hotel in Nairn, the beautiful Newton Hotel. That evening, after dinner, we were treated to an evening of Highland dancing and music.

You can see the Accordion player and his five year old son in the background and both they and the dancers put on a good show.
